The announcement by the Minister for Agriculture, Food & Marine that the BSE testing of healthy animals at slaughter will no longer be required from 1 April 2013 is very welcome news for Irish farmers both from a financial and confidence viewpoint and represents another step from a crisis that thankfully is well behind us according to Mr. Michael Guinan, Chairperson of ICMSA’s Beef & Cattle Committee.

BSE testing has been a massive cost on farmers and an annual saving of €5m is certainly significant.   The Minister is to be complimented for his work on this matter and he must endeavour to continue to take unnecessary costs and bureauracy out of farming, concluded Mr. Guinan.
