The Chairman of the ICMSA’s Farm Services and Environment Committee, Mr. Patrick Rohan, has welcomed confirmation by Minister for Transport Tourism and Sport, Mr. Leo Vardakar, that his Department is examining a proposed Statutory Instrument to allow an exemption to the height limit for the haulage of agricultural fodder in open trailers. A decision is expected in the coming weeks.

Mr. Rohan said that the recent introduction of new Regulations that permit the maximum height of vehicles for use on our roads to 4.65 metres will increase costs considerably for farmers in the transportation of straw, hay and haylage across the country and also create logistical and financial difficulties for the importation of forages.

Mr. Rohan called on the Minister to approve this exemption without delay as he believes this new restriction will simply add costs to our food production and exporting sectors.

Ends      22 January 2014.
