The President of ICMSA, John Comer, welcomed the “Glanbia Advance Payment” (GAP) Scheme and said that anything that helped farmers to ‘stay standing’ through this current and punitive price trough was positive and helpful. Mr Comer said that Glanbia had been both imaginative and forthcoming in terms of offering support to their suppliers and it was important to recognise that. But he said that it was equally important not to confuse sticking plasters with cures and the absolute imperative of restoring farmer milk price to viable levels must still be everyone’s priority.   That could only happen when the Government and Commission engaged with the fundamentals of the crisis and finally addressed the question of margins and basic fairness for primary food producers.
