ICMSA AGM Castletroy Park Hotel Limerick Picture Credit Brian Gavin Press 22Commenting on the granting of permission to Eirgrid for the pylons required for the North-South Interconnector, the President of ICMSA, John Comer, said his association had repeatedly stated that the line must be underground and that position remained unchanged. Mr. Comer stressed that ICMSA was in no sense, ‘ant-development’, nor were they questioning the engineering need for the Interconnector, but the long-term vision of the state and its crucial food production sector was best served by investing now in putting the line underground and this must be the preferred option. He noted also that as the engineering advanced the proportionate extra cost of ‘undergrounding’ the 400 kV line was falling and this, too, had to be factor. The smart strategic and sustainable option here was to decide on the underground option, concluded the ICMSA President.
