As the National Ploughing Championships get underway,we will publish the results of our exclusive ICMSA Irish Examiner  farming poll over three days from Tuesday, September 19

The national opinion poll, now in its fifth year, provides a unique insight into what's affecting farmers and attitudes to a range of social, economic and political issues.

Among the findings this year include:

  • A Trump visit to Ireland
  • Our attitudes to climate change
  • Government preparedness for Brexit
  • The state of play of political parties and their leaders
  • The Pope, Noirin O'Sullivan and the neglect of rural Ireland among others.

John Comer, President ICMSA commenting on the poll said: “ICMSA is delighted to partner the Irish Examiner in what is now widely acknowledged to be the most detailed and revealing snapshot of what farmers are thinking about on a whole range of economic, social and political issues.

"The Irish Examiner ICMSA farming poll – published over the three days of the Ploughing Championships – is now a vital and established part of the media and agri-sector landscape and doubtless will again reveal some surprising opinions and shifts in attitude.

"Previous surveys have proved to be uncannily accurate in mapping particularly changes in social sentiment amongst Ireland’s farming community and that’s just one of the reasons why it has become credible and consulted by anyone interested in what rural Ireland and its ‘backbone’ farming community is thinking and why they’re thinking it.”

The survey involved 569 face-to-face interviews with farm-dwelling adults in the Republic of Ireland. Fieldwork was completed by Behaviour & Attitudes over a two-week period between Sunday, August 13 and Sunday, August 27, with interviewing undertaken on-site by Behaviour & Attitudes interviewers across eight agricultural shows*.
